What is a PlanetLab proxy? PDF
Sunday, 18 June 2006

Proxy Servers marked as "PlanetLab" in our lists stem from the Planetlab CoDeeN (CDN) Project, which is a network of educational Internet nodes at Princeton University.
CDN stands for Content Distribution Network and is essentially a big mesh of high-speed proxy servers for the sake of serving certain content to .edu users.

PlanetLab proxies are open HTTP proxy servers, so you can use them to surf the web at high speeds. The Princeton network is really fast.

Here are a few things you should know about these proxies:

  • Global network: PlanetLab servers can be found all around the world.
  • High performance: The network shines with a superb connectivity.
  • Intro Page: The proxies mostly have a "splash page" showing up when you first access a website via a PlanetLab proxy, telling you about the CDN project.
  • Educational: The project is geared towards educational use. There may be content filters being applied.
  • No POST: There is no support for forms using the POST method, only GET.
  • Port 3128: There is a good possibility of bypassing firewalls which only block port 80 outbound.
  • Server List: Available nodes can be found at http://fall.cs.princeton.edu/codeen/
